Missouri's Poet Laureate Aliki Barnstone will be in St. Joseph today to conduct two original readings. Barnstone is a poetry writer and performer who says that her mission as the official Poet Laureate of Missouri is to promote diversity and engage the youth with the power of poetry.

St. Joseph Persisterhood Co-facilitator, Jane Frick, says they enjoy having writers and performers from all over the state to share their literary works.

"They adopt a purpose or a mission related to poetry.  And Miss Barnstone's is to work with youth, to convince them about the value of poetry, how it helps to make meaning and understanding.  She's also a committed person to inclusiveness and accepting diversity."

Barnstone's first reading will be with the Persisterhood of St. Joseph to share her original works with language arts students and their teachers at Central High School in St. Joseph.

"She's a very assessable poet, able to bring an image to life and let us reflect upon the story and the myth and the meaning of it."

Barnstone will also read a selection of her poems at the Persisterhood's "Powerful Poetry and Living Well in a Sustainable Environment" meeting, which begins at 5:45pm at the Rolling Hills Library on 1906 N. Belt Highway in St. Joseph.
